How to improve product manager communication with engineering?

Effective product management and software architecture both require communication and alignment between the two roles. When they operate in isolation from each other, whether in literal silos or just failing to understand each other’s perspectives, the result is an inefficient process and suboptimal outcomes. The solution is not as simple as just “training” each role on the other’s domain, which risks wasting time and being of little real use.

Instead, the key is to facilitate trust and ongoing communication between the roles. This could involve joint working sessions, role-playing or simulations, and clearly defining and communicating the key responsibilities and priorities of each role.

With greater understanding comes greater appreciation of the challenges each role faces, which enables productive compromise and collaboration. While it may not be possible to fully step into another role, gaining empathy and speaking a common language is sufficient to align product management and architecture.
